Trailview State Park Bethpage State Parkway

The builders of Rolling Hills and Pironi Estates intend to build Woodbury Hills on 5.2 acres of land located north of Woodbury-Cold Spring Road, east of Trailview State Park, (Formerly the Bethpage State Parkway Right of Way), and 680 feet west of Whitney Lane. 86,000 cubic yards of dirt and 3.1 acres of woods will be removed and leveled to construct 5 luxury houses. A private road from the Syosset-Woodbury Road and Woodbury Road intersection will be built to access these houses.

SAVE THE WOODS OF WOODBURY

A public hearing will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 to collect input on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement prepared by the builder who wishes to excavate Woodbury Hill adjacent to Trailview State Park's green belt trail.

The area is the hill just south of the LIRR tracks near Stillwell Woods Preserve.

The hearing will be at 6:30pm in the legislative chamber at 1 West St, Mineola NY

The proposed action involves the subdivision of a 5.2 acre parcel into five single family homes. The parcel is bounded by the LIRR and Stillwell Park Preserve to the north and Woodbury Road to the south and Trailview State Park to the west.

The parcel is comprised of steep and irregular slopes and will require the extensive use of retaining walls to establish a grade acceptable for development.

Retaining walls will be built on the western and eastern borders and in some cases will be taller than ten feet. Two drainage sumps will be constructed as well.

What does all this mean?

The trail that leads to Stillwell from Stop and Shop may not be continuous as we know it. The old trail that goes down the hill as well as the hiking trail segment will most likely be lost to this development and the view from the trail will be of McMansions.

Had enough of McMansions encroaching on our precious green space? Show up and support our opposition to this project. You can sign up to speak or you can just show up as a sign of solidarity and to show Nassau County how many people are opposed to this project.

The world is run by people who show up!

If you remember, a few years ago we went to the scoping meeting where they took our comments about what environmental concerns we wanted addressed in the draft environmental impact study. They have now completed the final EIS.

State Parks are interested in purchasing it but no offers were made yet. We were able to add the property to the NY State Open Space Plan as a priority parcel that needs preservation.

It used to be part of the Bethpage Parkway ROW but was sold to a private developer years ago and now he wants to pave paradise and put up more parking lots.
